It is all too common a scene throughout Center City – bicycles (forgive the archaism) locked to a signpost or similar, in the blink of an eye, the bike is rapidly and efficiently denuded.
I should, but will not, restrain from commenting that all to often these bikes are locked illegally in certain places; but even with my “resident cap” on, I consider far too excessive for such radical punishment to be inflicted on such miscreants.
What staggers me as I view this picture (about half a block from our home) is that another cyclist locks a bike in such a location almost daring the perpetrators of such transport evil to execute a similarly dastardly crime! Is this insanity or what?
Or, and this is so hard to believe, the cyclist of an erstwhile healthy and functional bicycle considers him/herself to be so incredibly unique that such a fate will not befall them. What I came to learn in 12 Step Programs is often called “Terminal Uniqueness”.
Would you believe it?
And let me put to rest the rumor that this cyclical (?) damage is being done by pedestrians almost run over by sidewalk pedaling cyclists and stop/red light ignoring pedal pushers/
At least, I hope it’s valid so to do.
When in doubt ascribe a quotation to Oscar Wilde and so I do… “Marriage after divorce is simply the triumph of hope over experience”. Cyclists beware!
